How to Prepare for Your CBT: A Checklist for Delivery Riders
Published 19 December 2024
Preparing for your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) ensures you make the most of your day and pass with confidence. Use this checklist to set yourself up for success.

1. Book in Advance
Choose a DVSA-approved centre and secure your spot. Make sure the course date fits your schedule, and confirm what equipment is provided.
2. Gather Your Documents
Bring your UK provisional or full driving licence. Without this, you won’t be allowed to take the course.
3. Get the Right Gear
Wear protective clothing, including:
- A certified helmet
- Gloves
- Sturdy boots
- A jacket with padding (if possible)
Check if your training centre provides gear or if you need to bring your own.
4. Brush Up on Highway Code
Review the Highway Code to familiarise yourself with road signs, markings, and rules. A basic understanding will help during the theory session.
5. Ensure Your Bike is Ready
If you’re using your own moped or motorcycle, it must be roadworthy, insured, taxed, and display L plates. Most centres provide bikes, so confirm this when booking.
6. Get Plenty of Rest
CBT can be an intensive day. Ensure you’re well-rested and ready to focus.
7. Arrive Early
Punctuality shows your commitment and ensures you have time to settle in before the training begins.
With the right preparation, your CBT day will be a productive and enjoyable experience. Completing this training is your first step toward becoming a confident and capable delivery rider.
