How Long Does a CBT Last, and What Happens When It Expires?

Published 2 September 2026

If you have already completed your Compulsory Basic Training, or you are about to book your first course, one of the most practical questions you can ask is how long your CBT certificate actually lasts. It is a straightforward question, but the answer has some important consequences if you get it wrong. This guide covers everything you need to know, including what to do when your certificate runs out and how to make sure you are always riding legally.

Your CBT Lasts for Two Years

Once you pass your CBT, your certificate is valid for two years from the date of completion. During that period, you are legally permitted to ride a motorcycle or scooter on public roads, provided you stick to the conditions that come with it. After those two years, the certificate expires and cannot be extended or renewed retrospectively. If you want to keep riding, you need to take the course again before getting back on the road.

This catches quite a few riders out, particularly those who completed their CBT, rode for a while, then stepped away from riding for a period. Coming back to find your certificate has lapsed is frustrating, but the good news is that rebooking is simple and the training day itself tends to feel far more comfortable the second time around.

What Happens When Your CBT Expires?

Once your certificate expires, you are no longer legally allowed to ride on L plates. There is no grace period and no partial cover. Riding without a valid CBT or a full licence is illegal, and doing so could affect your insurance and result in a fixed penalty or prosecution.

The only way to ride again legally is to retake your CBT and pass it afresh. You do not carry anything over from your previous certificate. The course is the same full-day programme, and you will need to complete every element to receive a new two-year certificate.

If this applies to you, book your CBT with LMRT and get your certificate back in place before you ride again.

How to Check When Your CBT Expires

Your CBT expiry date is straightforward to work out. Your certificate, known as a DL196, shows the date it was issued. Add two years to that date and you have your expiry. If you have misplaced your certificate, you can check your riding entitlement through the DVLA's View Driving Licence service online using your driving licence number and National Insurance number.

It is worth building a reminder into your calendar well in advance, so that your renewal does not creep up on you unexpectedly.

The Rules While Riding on a CBT

While your CBT is valid, there are a few important restrictions you must follow. You must display L plates front and rear at all times. You cannot carry a pillion passenger under any circumstances. You are not permitted to ride on motorways. These rules apply for the full two-year period, regardless of how long you have been riding or how experienced you feel.

Breaking any of these conditions is a legal offence, so it is worth being clear on them from the outset. They apply for as long as you are riding on a CBT certificate.
