Keep riding when your CBT runs out

A CBT certificate lasts two years. A renewal course puts a fresh one in your hand and keeps you legal on the road.

What a renewal is

The same course, run for riders who already ride

A CBT certificate cannot be extended. To stay on the road once yours runs out you take the course again, and that day is what we call a renewal.

It covers the same five elements as your first CBT, because the DVSA requires every one of them each time. What changes is you. You arrive already riding, so your instructor can spend the day sharpening the way you handle the bike and the road rather than starting from scratch.

You leave with a new certificate, valid for another two years from the day you complete it.

Book Your CBT Renewal

Choose CBT - Renewal when you pick your course, then your date. Renewal dates are in the course planner from October.

Who the renewal course is for

A renewal assumes a level of competency. We expect a renewal rider to turn up riding well already, so the day works as a refresh rather than a fresh start.

If that does not sound like you, book the standard CBT instead. You finish with exactly the same certificate, and you get the full day to build your confidence back up, which is the safer way round if you have been off the bike for a while.

See the standard CBT
  • Your CBT is still current, or was completed within the last 27 months.
  • You have been riding regularly since you passed it, not once or twice a year.
  • You can ride confidently and safely on the road, to the standard we expect of a renewal rider.

How to prepare

Same paperwork and same kit as your first CBT, with one extra thing to check if you plan to ride to us.

What to bring

A valid UK licence (card only). If you have a European licence you will also need a D91 form from the DVLA. If you wear glasses, bring them for the eyesight check.

What to wear

Jeans are a minimum, with sturdy footwear such as Timberland boots or Dr Martens (no steel toe caps). Tracksuit bottoms and trainers are not acceptable. We provide helmets, gloves and jackets.

Using your own bike

If you want to ride your own bike on the course, your CBT must still be current. Once a certificate has expired you are no longer legal on the road, so train on one of ours instead and tell us when you book.

Not sure which to book?

Send Ian your certificate date

If you are not certain whether your certificate still counts, or how long it has been since you last rode properly, send a quick message with the date on your certificate and we will tell you which course to book. It is a two minute answer and it saves you turning up to the wrong day.
